Handbook of Tissue Engineering Scaffolds: Volume One, provides a comprehensive and authoritative review on recent advancements in the application and use of composite scaffolds in tissue engineering. Chapters focus on specific tissue/organ (mostly on the structure and anatomy), the materials used for treatment, natural composite scaffolds, synthetic composite scaffolds, fabrication techniques, innovative materials and approaches for scaffolds preparation, host response to the scaffolds, challenges and future perspectives, and more. Bringing all the information together in one major reference, the authors systematically review and summarize recent research findings, thus providing an in-depth understanding of scaffold use in different body systems.- Dedicated to the specialist topic of composite scaffolds, featuring all human body systems- Covers basic fundamentals and advanced clinical applications- Includes up-to-date information on preparation methodology and characterization techniques- Highlights clinical data and case studies
Dr. Masoud Mozafari is a Fellow at Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute, Mount Sinai Health Hospital, University of Toronto. He was previously Assistant Professor and Director of the Bioengineering Lab, at the Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Department, Materials and Energy Research Center, Cellular and Molecular Research Center, and Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine of the Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), Tehran, Iran. Dr. Mozafari’s research interests range across biomaterials, nanotechnology, and tissue engineering, and he is known for the development of strategies for the treatment of damaged tissues and organs, and controlling biological substances for targeted delivery into the human body. Dr. Mozafari has received several awards, including the Khwarizmi Award and the Julia Polak European Doctorate Award for outstanding translational research contributions to the field of biomaterials. He has also received the WIPO Medal for Inventors from The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in recognition of his contributions to economic and technological development. Dr. Mozafari is currently working on the editorial board of several journals.
Dr Farshid Sefat is Director and Programme Leader in Clinical Engineering and Associate Professor in Regenerative Medicine at the University of Bradford (UK). He previously served as Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department at King Faisal University (Saudi Arabia), and as a Visiting Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology (New Jersey, USA). He completed his postdoctoral research in corneal tissue engineering at the University of Sheffield (UK), and received his PhD and BEng degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Bradford (UK). His research focuses on the development of biomaterials to control cellular behaviour, with particular emphasis on engineered materials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. He is an author of more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials and review papers, and more than 100 book chapters and edited books. He serves on the editorial boards of and as a reviewer for numerous international journals in biomaterials, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, biomedical engineering and related fields. His research expertise includes aesthetic medicine, breast reconstruction, and skin and corneal regenerative medicine.
Anthony Atala, MD, is the G. Link Professor and Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Seventeen of his lab’s technologies have been translated to patients, including the first tissue-engineered organ for permanent implantation in a human. His research led to the discovery of a multipotent source of stem cells from amniotic fluid and placenta, advances in 3D printing of tissues and organs, and body-on-a-chip technologies. His work was twice listed among Time Magazine’s top 10 medical breakthroughs of the year, and he is a recipient of the Smithsonian Ingenuity Award. He has published over 900 journal articles, is the editor of 25 books, and holds over 250 national and international patents. Dr. Atala is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Inventors, and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
